Research Programme Overview

This research focuses on the structured analysis of complex, long-running political problems that resist straightforward resolution. These problems are typically characterised by high political salience, institutional entrenchment, contested interpretations, and enduring social consequences.

The unifying feature of my work is a problem-led research approach rather than a single substantive policy domain. I develop and apply the Trinity Diagnostic Approach (TDA) to examine how political problems emerge, persist, and evolve across explicit political mechanisms, attitudinal and perceptual dynamics, and deeper societal factors. This approach is designed to preserve analytical rigour while managing the cognitive and evidential complexity inherent in large-scale political issues.

Research projects are selected through a formal Problem Suitability Score (PSS), ensuring that cases warrant sustained analytical attention. Each project then proceeds through structured diagnosis and concludes with diagnostically anchored, credibly reasoned policy recommendations, constrained by the findings of the analysis rather than by advocacy or commentary.

While my applied work spans areas such as health policy, immigration, welfare, constitutional reform, defence, and foreign policy, these domains serve as case contexts rather than defining the scope of the research programme.
